CHALLENGES & INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
CHALLENGE
Limited ROW & Steep Slope Vulnerability
Highway construction within a restricted Right of Way (ROW) poses significant design and execution hurdles. For the Lampang Bypass Road project (Km. 4+075.00 to Km. 4+275.00 specifically), severe spatial limitations mandate the excavation of high-angle cut slopes. This creates critical safety and structural vulnerabilities that standard earthwork methods cannot resolve.
-
Restricted Geometry: Inability to excavate standard, naturally stable slope gradients.
-
Geotechnical Hazards: Elevated risk of steep slope failures, rockfalls, and mass wasting.
-
Project Demands: Requires immediate engineering interventions that balance structural safety, rapid construction, and cost-effectiveness.
SOLUTION
Soil Nailing & Surface Protection Systems
To mitigate the risks associated with steep slope excavation, the engineering team at the Lampang Highway Construction Center designed a stabilization strategy utilizing artificial ground reinforcement. This approach provides a highly effective, budget-conscious resolution to topographical constraints while ensuring the long-term integrity of the embankment.
-
Ground Reinforcement: Implementation of Soil Nailing and Rock Bolting to internally strengthen the soil and rock mass.
-
Surface Protection: Application of a Shotcrete facing to prevent localized collapse and surface weathering.
-
Technical Benchmarking: Documentation of this analytical and design framework to serve as a standardized reference for future constrained-ROW projects.
THE OUTCOME
Successful Execution of Engineered Slope Stabilization
Following rigorous slope stability analysis, a customized ground reinforcement system utilizing soil nails and a shotcrete facing was meticulously designed and successfully executed on-site. The completed construction effectively neutralizes the geotechnical risks associated with high-angle slope cuts within the constrained Right of Way (ROW). Ultimately, the project delivered a highly stable, long-term solution that ensures the structural safety of the highway while maximizing cost-effectiveness and construction efficiency.
